Montserrat Sanz Yagüe, PhD

Short self-introduction

I am a full professor and the head of the Spanish Department at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies in Kobe (Japan). After getting a Master's and a PhD in Linguistics and Brain and Cognitive Science in the USA, I moved to Japan 21 years ago. As I started learning Japanese while teaching Spanish, I initiated a long path towards understanding the mental processes that underlie second language learning in adulthood Throughout the years, I have explored the learning processes of Japanese native speakers acquiring Spanish. Four years ago, to the research with university students majoring in Spanish, I added research on older learners. I now coordinate a program for senior (60-year old or over) Japanese speakers learning Spanish at all levels. Recently, a student in my team has also undertaken a study on how learning Spanish intensively can help Japanese high school students improve their English skills. You can see all of these projects here.
